BLR is a 501(c)(3) educational organization founded on December 23, 2019 by Dr. Sherice Janaye Nelson. She saw the lack of dialogue between older Black civic organizations and younger ones and was determined to bring all of us back around the table. The idea was birthed when learning of roundtable talks that happened in the 70’s through the 90’s with Black civic organizations. Therefore, the harnessing of power in the fight for racial equality and full citizenship through education is the mission of The Black Leadership Roundtable. The late Dr. Ronald Walters, the brainchild of the Congressional Black Caucus, believed in Black Power. Yet he asserted that such power needed leadership. In his spirit, the organization will seek to fulfill these roles in four ways by promoting:
BLR will serve as an umbrella, and is the only organization with the mission of connecting older and younger Black civic organizations. Returning to the table to honor those who have come before us, to share in knowledge, and recognize each other’s expertise. These table talks allow us to recognize the humanity of one another while finding areas of agreement to promote unity. The organization’s hallmark event is the Virtual Black Roundtable Summit that gathers Black power brokers in business, civil rights, eduction, healthcare, and housing. The experts will gather to talk and the community will be able to stream these conversations live. BLR knows that it is necessary to re-establish dialogue amongst our community at the start of the new decade so that we may effectively harness power.
